A beautiful day to ‘Spring Up the Bluff’

GERING — Scotts Bluff National Monument concluded its week-long celebration of National Parks Week with the annual Spring Up the Bluff Relay Race. Weather was cooperative and the event saw generous crowd of participants. Parking was scarce within a half hour of the race. Ten running teams and six walking Teams competed this year.

Relay teams of six started from the Visitor Center and ran or walked 1.6 miles up Summit Road to the top of Scotts Bluff National Monument. Each leg of the relay was approximately .2 to .3 miles. More than 150 people packed the monument’s amphitheater after the race for an award ceremony.

The first place running team, “Coming Around The Mountain When We Come,” (T.J. Dredla, David Griffiths, Nick Spain, Trinity Fuss, Tito Garcia and D.J. Griffiths) and the first place walking team “Y Nots” (Justin Relka, Rhonda O’Bryan, Wendy Closson, Karen Ott, Deanna Stricker and Kris Lupher) received trophies.

Several teams were awarded certificates for placing first in their respective categories, with special recognition going to “The Six Stooges” as the youngest team, comprised of 10-11 year-old-boys, and Scotts Bluff Kiwanis’s “Aktion Club,” comprised of special needs athletes.

A multitude of raffle prizes were donated by sponsors: Oregon Trail Museum Association, Gering Bakery, Pamela Podowiltz, Papa Murphy’s, Sonic Drive-in of Gering, Scottsbluff US Army Recruiting Station, The Historic Midwest Theater, Mike’s Husker and Main Street Market.

The Scotts Bluff National Monument Visitor Center is open daily from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The summit road remains open from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. All trails are open from sunrise until sunset.
