Good Morning friend!
Graffiti on the Grass artistic fun
July 12, 2012 Doug Harris
Art will meet nature as part of the annual Oregon Trail Days celebration this year. Dubbed “Graffiti on the Grass,” interested artists are invited to register for this new event. Participants will compete Saturday at 1 p.m. by decorating a 4-6 foot space on the lawn near the Oregon Trail Days building at 1225 J Street in Oregon Trail Park. There is no entry fee; however, only the first 12 people to sign up will be involved in the competition. Participants must sign up by Friday at 4 p.m. or immediately prior to the event assuming spaces are still available.
“It should be very interesting,” said event organizer Bill Peters. “People will be using chalk to make the art. They will be provided with spray on chalk and will be able to paint the grass itself.”
Peters said the spray chalk is harmless to the grass and will make a nice new addition to the many traditional Oregon Trail Days events. The painting will begin on Saturday, July 14 at 1 p.m. and a $50 first prize will be awarded to the artist who designs the most interesting piece reflective of the overall theme of the Oregon Trail Days festivities. Second prize will receive $30, with third prize receiving $20.
“We are also letting folks know they can tie in the 125th anniversary of Gering in this contest,” Peters said. “So art and designs that tie in our local history will be welcome.”
A local artist (yet to be announced) will serve as judge in the “Graffiti on the Grass” contest. For more information contact Bill Peters at (308) 436-7136 or Jo Steir at (308) 436-4457.
