![]() Gering residents and Oregon Trail Days visitors will be in for a treat Thursday evening, July 12, when the annual Kickoff Barbecue and Street Dance formally starts a weekend of fun for everyone. Starting at 6 p.m., the barbecue will be served by members of the Gering City Council and Gering city employees. The barbecue beef sandwiches and chips, from The Meat Shoppe, will be offered at $2.25 a plate. Shortly after the dinner begins the Drivin’ Dynamics will play old favorites and summertime rock and roll. Folks are invited to put on their dancing shoes and join everyone in front of the Scotts Bluff County Courthouse for the festivities. “This will be our second year holding the barbecue in front of the courthouse,” event organizer and City of Gering Human Resource director Carrie Havranek said. “The big trees in front of the courthouse offer so much shade it really seemed wise to move the event down the street a few blocks to get everyone out of the hot sun. “The City Council members enjoy serving the sandwiches and having a chance to visit with people,” Havranek added. “It is a good chance for people to relax, have a nice dinner and listen to some music. Holding the dance and barbecue in front of the courthouse went over well last year. All of that shade is beneficial, especially with the hot days we’ve been having lately.” The Drivin’ Dynamics have been playing at community events and dances in the Valley for over 50 years. They have been a part of the annual Oregon Trail Days fun since the 1960s. This year’s Kickoff Barbecue and Street Dance is sponsored by U.S. Bank, in cooperation with the City of Gering.
