It was the Fourth of July and according to the outside temperature display on the dashboard of the car it was 101 degrees and we were parked in a rare bit of shade on the wide open, parched prairie southeast of Courthouse and Jail rock. We were near the mouth of a long, shallow canyon that lies between the Lodgepole Creek and the North Platte River valleys at a place called Mud Springs.
