![]() Like my fellow baby boomers, I learned to read using good old phonics workbooks, the kind that forced you to learn the sounds certain letters make when they are spoken aloud and how the meaning and sounds change according to which consonants or vowels follow or precede the letter. Spelling workbooks were equally difficult with long lists to memorize and dreadful tests every day or so it seemed to a seven-year-old. I hated those ha...
