|Riverside Discover Center to kick off summer season|
|May 19, 2011|
SCOTTSBLUFF - The summer season at the Riverside Discovery Center will officially kick off Saturday, May 21. The public is invited to join the fun from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. for many great activities. The Splash Pad is open so bring your towels & sunscreen.
Several vendors will be selling items at various sites within the zoo. According to Special Events chairman, Kristy Culek, vendors who are interested in having a booth at the Summer Season Kick-Off are welcome and need to register by calling 308-630-6236. There is a $20 booth registration fee and the deadline to register is Friday, May 20.
There will be lots of animal interaction that day, as the docents will be doing interpretation with several educational animals and zookeepers will be conducting animal enrichment activities throughout the day. You can plan to spend the day, as a hot dog lunch will be available for $4.00. Children may enjoy the playground and take part in an animal scavenger hunt.
According to Executive Director, Anne James, “Saturday, there will also be several ways the public can offer to help the Riverside Discovery Center. We are a regional facility benefiting people for more than 200 miles around and we need support from our patrons.” People who want to help care for the animals in our collection can join the Adopt An Animal program and help provide financial care for the animals. The cost of each adoption is the actual cost of feeding that animal for 1 year. “We can always use volunteers”, continued Anne. Those people with a green thumb can show it off by signing up for an Adopt A Spot and care for a bit of landscaping at the Riverside Discovery Center. “The Adopt A Spots are very much enjoyed by our visitors.” Volunteers are also needed in the gift shop and as docents – trained educational volunteers who teach about the animals and the environment. There will be booths available for people to sign up to help the RDC during the Season Kick-Off.
Memberships will be sold, with the family membership on sale for $65. This allows a family or grandparents & their young grandchildren unlimited admission to not only the Riverside Discovery Center, but also Wildlife World, until it moves to the RDC site later in 2011.
“Since we will be beginning construction soon for a new museum/education center, contributions to our capital construction campaign are very welcome,” said James. The RDC also has a program for those businesses and families who wish to support the everyday expenses of the organization. The Sustaining Partners program is a 5-year commitment in which the donor selects the amount they would like to contribute and the month they wish to be invoiced. Board President, Tony Kaufman, says “The Sustaining Partner program allows the businesses to budget for the contribution for five years and keeps them from being solicited for money every year. As a perk, they receive tickets to the Zoobilee and have their name displayed on the Sustaining Partners Board of Distinction to advertise their generous support of our organization.” The Sustaining Partner Board will be installed this summer at RDC.
On Saturday, children can sign up for the fun and exciting summer programs the Riverside Discovery Center will be hosting. Registration is will also be available for High Plains Science Adventures, a summer science camp for 5th – 8th grade students presented by Children and Nature in Our Parks.
The Season Kick-Off will be held at the Riverside Discovery Center (former Riverside Zoo) 1600 South Beltline Highway West, Scottsbluff, NE, from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Saturday, May 21. The Riverside Discovery Center is owned and supported by the Riverside Zoological Foundation, a 501©3 non-profit organization. All donations and proceeds will benefit the Riverside Discovery Center. Daily admission is $4 for adults, and $2 for children 5 years & up and seniors, children 4 years and under are free. RDC members are admitted free.
