Details surrounding the issue that led to last week’s suspension of beloved Gering High School Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Tom O’Boyle will apparently remain a mystery.
The Gering Public Schools released a public statement Tuesday saying the matter had been resolved but provided little that would help quash rumors or explain the situation that has been boiling for a week.
“The personnel matter involving Tom O’Boyle has been cooperatively resolved between the Gering Public Schools and Mr. O’Boyle. He will travel with his team to Adams Central Public Schools on Friday, September 24th,” the statement reads in its entirety.
Gering Schools Superintendent Don Hague was contacted by telephone shortly after the statement was released Tuesday and asked to comment in the interest of defending O’Boyle’s reputation and the reputation of the district in the wake of rampant rumors. He declined to comment further or confirm that the issue at hand did or did not involve any students.
“I can’t say anything more than what that statement is. That was the agreed upon statement,” he said, adding that the situation is a “personnel issue.”
Any further information, he said, would have to come directly from O’Boyle. O’Boyle has not commented about the situation.
The suspension began on Thursday, Sept. 16, preventing O’Boyle from coaching the Gering Bulldogs’ Friday night football game in McCook and from attending practices or fulfilling other duties at the school. Assistant football coach Jimmie Rhodes led the football team in O’Boyle’s absence while Jack Martin, assistant athletic director, filled in as interim athletic director. Read more by Dawn Bowen |
