| Doris Madelyn Elder February 13, 1916 – August 10, 2011 Doris Madelyn Elder passed away Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011 at the age of 95. Funeral services were Aug. 15 at the United Methodist Church in Gering with Pastor Lauren Ekdahl officiating. Interment was in the Bayard Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to the Gering Methodist Church. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.geringchapel.com. Madelyn was born Feb. 13, 1916 in Lakeside, Neb. to Daniel and Hazel (Hunsaker) Thompson. She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1934. On Feb. 13, 1936 she married Paul Russell Elder. To this union were born three children: Dennis Neal of Edina, Minn., Marva Dee of Scotland, S.D. and Douglas Paul of Los Angeles Calif. Most of her life was spent in Bayard where she worked for the Great Western Sugar Company, from which she retired in 1980. Shortly after the death of her husband Paul in 1990, Madelyn moved to Scottsbluff where she resided until her death. Her main interests were family, sports, and travel. An avid Husker fan, she drove to Lincoln for Husker football games for many years including last season. She traveled extensively throughout the world – walking the Great Wall in China, climbing the Tower of Pisa, holding koalas in Australia, riding a camel in Egypt, and parasailing in Hawaii. One regret was not visiting South Africa. A major highlight was skydiving in Arizona on her 93rd birthday. Madelyn volunteered many years at Regional West Medical Center, only giving up this job a few months before her death. She was an active member of the Methodist Church in Bayard before transferring to the Gering church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and 8 & 40, and served on the Bayard School Board. She is survived by her children and their spouses, five grandsons and wives, and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband: Paul; her parents, and one brother. | |
