Ted “Rip” Van Winkle, 80, of Gering, passed away Friday, March 16, 2012 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Funeral services were March 19 at Central Church of Christ in Gering with Lyle Hinebauch and Herb Rainey officiating. Interment was in West Lawn Cemetery in Gering.
Memorials have been established to Summit Christian College or to Restorative Care Unit of Regional West Medical Center. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.dugankramer.com.
Rip was born June 7, 1931 in Minatare to Hugh and Edie May (Hewitt) Van Winkle. He graduated from Minatare High School. He married Ava Birdsall April 13, 1952 in Minatare.
Rip worked for Idlewyld Dairy and Stickney's tire shop before beginning his 30-year career with Herber Supply as an employee and later part owner / manager. He retired in June of 1993.
As a member of the Church at Bryant, he served as a deacon and youth group leader. Rip enjoyed bowling and camping with his family.
He is survived by his wife: Ava; daughters: Jeannie (Rod) Bear of Gering, Stacey (Ernie) Schmidt of Sidney and Kristin (Dave) Pauli of Gering ; sisters: Zada Kreiling of Gering and Irene (Don) Smith of Gering ; sister-in-law: Grayce Van Winkle of Scottsbluff; grandchildren: Tim Bear, Nikki Scott, Jesse Bear, Stacea, Jace , Macey , and J. J. Pauli; great-grandchildren: Taylor, Cherry, Breylan and Aedyn Bear, and Wriley Scott; honorary grandchildren: Emma, Ella and Evan Strom and Isaiah and Sammy Hulbert.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Hershell and W. E. Van Winkle; grandson: Kaden Pauli; and mother-in-law: Ava Roland.
