Fred Kenneth “Ken” Hoffman was born south of Grant, Neb. on Nov. 9, 1919. He was the first of three sons born to George and Ella (Jooston) Hoffman. Ken grew up on the farm and started school at Perkins Pride rural school before coming to Grant where he graduated from Perkins County High School in 1938.
Ken was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps during World War II and returned to his home state of Nebraska where he fell in love with the young girl with whom he had been corresponding during his recuperation in a military hospital in San Diego.
