| Albert Abel December 15, 1920 – April 28, 2012 Albert Abel, 91, of Scottsbluff, died Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Heritage Estates in Gering. His funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 3 at the Salem Congregational Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Dale Brown officiating. Interment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery. Albert was born in Melbeta on Dec. 15, 1920, to John and Amelia Abel. After receiving his elementary education in the Mitchell Valley Schools, he entered Mitchell High School, graduating with the class of 1939. He entered the US Army Air Corps in 1941, and after receiving training at Curtis Wright Aviation School in Glendale, Calif., he was transferred to the 41st Repair Squadron in Albuquerque, N.M., from where he received his honorable discharge in 1942. He married Molly Kraft in 1944, and after farming and feeding cattle for several years in the area, they purchased land north of Scottsbluff, continuing their operation in 1980. After building a home in 1998, they moved into Scottsbluff where they reside. Albert received numerous awards from Great Western Sugar Factory for high sugar tonnage per acre. He loved farming and feeding cattle, which he called his “dollies.” He loved hunting and fishing and his boat. He spent many days on Nebraska and Wyoming streams and reservoirs. Albert was a longtime member of the Salem Congregational Church, serving as trustee and on other committees during the construction of the new church in the early 1960s. He had served on the First National and First Security Bank boards for 18 years, and was a life member of Elks Lodge #1367 in Scottsbluff. He is survived by his wife: Molly Abel of Scottsbluff; his daughter: Teresa of Scottsbluff; his son: Larry and his wife Jill Abel of Denver, Colo.; granddaughter: Isadora of Denver; brothers: John (Lorraine); Harold (Patricia) and Leonard (Francis), all of Scottsbluff; sisters: Irene Mueller of North Platte, Neb. and Lenore (Bill) Henderson of Scottsbluff; and sister in law: Charlene (Glen) Speer, also of Scottsbluff. His parents; brother: Bob; and sister: Catherine preceded him in death. | |
