| Mary Ellen Walter November 9, 1926 – May 10, 2012 Mary Ellen (Johnston) Walter, 85 of Gering, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Emerald Court in Scottsbluff. Her memorial service was May 14 at Center Cross Community Church in Gering with Pastor Michael Mead officiating. Burial was at West Lawn Cemetery. At her request, she was cremated. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the church or to the family. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.geringchapel.com. Gering Memorial Chapel and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements. Mary Ellen was born on Nov. 9, 1926 in Bridgeport, Neb. to Leo S. and Lila (Norris) Johnston. She graduated from high school in Brooklyn, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Henry Walter on July 3, 1947 in Mitchell and made their home in western Nebraska until settling in Gering. She was a member of the Gering Baptist Church and the TOPS group. She worked at CO-OP for several years in the meat department and as a checker until she retired. Survivors include her children: Margaret (Jerry) Hitchings of Rye, Texas, Marjorie (Dotz) Wilhelm of Gering, Marietta Graves of Gering and Tom (Barbara) Walter of Fredericksburg, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; sister: Barbara (Keith) Rice of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Clifford (Connie) Johnston of Cheyenne, Wyo. and Duane (Lori) Johnston of Modesto, Calif.; sister-in-law: Joyce Johnston of Scottsbluff ;and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son-in-law: Steve Wilhelm; granddaughter: Mary Geneva Hitchings; brothers: Bob (Erma) Johnston and Leo Johnston; sisters: Betty Metz and Hannah Johnston; and friend: Curly Krawjewski. | |
