| Jerry Lanning October 8, 1950 – June 9, 2012 Jerry Lanning, age 61, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday June 9, 2012 after a long battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. A celebration of his life will be held Thursday, June 14 at 2 p.m. at Calvary Memorial Church, 265 18th Street in Gering. Burial will be at West Lawn Cemetery with military honors by the U.S. Navy. Per his request we ask that all who attend do not wear black, he wanted this to be a celebration not mourning. A memorial fund has been established on Jerry’s behalf to the Community Christian School’s building fund, which he found was of great importance, as his grandchildren currently all attend CCS. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.geringchapel.com. Jerry was born in Omaha, Neb. on Oct. 8, 1950 to Jack Lanning and Henrietta (Schmidt) Lanning. He attended Omaha Public Schools and graduated in 1968. After graduation he served with the US Navy on the USS Meyerkord, and had two tours in Vietnam. Upon discharge he graduated with a degree in computer science. On Feb. 19, 1977 he married Shirley Routzong. In 1986, Jerry and his wife were blessed with the adoption of a daughter, Stefani. He and his family resided in Gering for 28 years. He worked for Western Nebraska Community College as a computer analyst from 1981 to 2000. Following his employment at the college he took on the position of a computer programmer at Cabela’s where he worked until his retirement in 2011. Jerry was proud to be a grandpa to five grandchildren: Jazmine age 13; Alyssa age 12; Gabriel age 8; Carlos age 7; and Izayah age 3. He thought the world of his grandchildren and knew that every moment spent with them was precious and memorable. He left a legacy for each of his grandchildren that will be carried with them all their lives. Jerry will be especially remembered for his extraordinary faith that was seen through everything he did. We will all remember him for his laughter, smile, and unconditional love. So grandpa did you find your room okay and did God answer your question as to why He made avocado seeds so large? He is survived by his wife: Shirley; daughter: Stefani; son-in-law: Jesse; granddaughters: Jazmine and Alyssa; grandsons: Gabriel, Carlos, and Izayah; brother: Chuck; nieces: Alena and Cassie; great-niece: Samantha; sister: Juanita; mother in law: Mona (Routzong) Hirner, along with her spouse, Al Hirner.
