| Jack David Lewis October 25, 1932 – July 16, 2012 Jack David “Timber Jack” Lewis, 79, of Gering, passed away Monday, July 16, 2012 at Regional West Medical Center under skilled and vigilant care. Jack had struggled with lung and heart conditions for several years despite his reluctance to discuss them. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 20 at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Scottsbluff with Fr. Kelsey Hogue officiating. Inurnment will be in West Lawn Cemetery in Gering with military rites by the U. S. Air Force. A memorial has been established to the Farm And Ranch Museum. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.geringchapel.com. Jack was born Oct. 25, 1932 in Lexington, Neb. to Robert and Cora (Mitchel) Lewis. He was fond of stories of him and his friends timing fireworks to agitate the on-duty police officer, while appearing innocent. That hobby continued into his senior years, sans on-duty police officers. Jack served in the Air Force four years during the Korean War and his pride in and love of his country never ceased. His home never went without a flag as a reminder of his, his brother Robert, and his father-in-law, Warren Wood’s service. Jack married Carol Ann Wood Jan. 8, 1956 and together took the helm of the Gering Courier. Many friends and memories were made at the Courier, and as editor, publisher, and weekly columnist, Jack was able to do that which was important to him; support the health and growth of Gering. He did the same with his involvement in Oregon Trail Days, the County Tourism Committee, the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge and other activities. Besides hunting with friends Tom Scripter, Mick Reavis, and many others, Jack taught his children the same; hunting if they were so inclined, fishing, and an appreciation of the outdoors and Panhandle panorama. An avid supporter of Game and Parks, if waters were posted catch and release, catch and release it was. 55 mph was another story. Jack is survived by his brother: Robert Lewis of Grand Island, Neb.; children: Lynn Dee of Greeley, Colo., Lauri of Scottsbluff, Shan of Gering and Tam of Scottsbluff; and great-grandchildren: Julia and Emily Reeser of Colorado. He was preceded in death by his wife: Carol Ann; and his parents: Robert and Cora Lewis. | |
