| Sylvestre Landeros Savala December 27, 1923 – July 31, 2012 Sylvestre Landeros Savala, 88 of Gering, passed away Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at his home. His funeral services were Aug. 3 at Gering Memorial Chapel with Fr. Gerald Harr officiating. Interment was in Bayard Cemetery in Bayard with military honors by the Nebraska Army National Guard. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.geringchapel.com. Sylvestre was born on Dec. 27, 1923 in Indiahoma, Okla. to Aristeo and Matilda (Landeros) Savala. He entered the U.S. Army on March 30, 1943. He toured in Rhineland, Central Europe, Rome-Arno and Naples Foggia. He received numerous awards and ribbons including:The Victory Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Ribbon, four Bronze Campaign Stars, European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon and The Purple Heart while serving during WWII and was honorably discharged on Oct. 31, 1945. He met his love of his life in March of 1965, Esther Garcia and to this union they had four children: Raul, Anthony, Richard and Ramona. Sylvestre never met a stranger in his life, would always help anyone in any capacity. He enjoyed working and fixing old cars and loved being around his family. He was a member of the DAV Chapter 13. Survivors include his wife: Esther Savala; sons: Raul Savala of Bayard, Anthony Savala of Gering, Richard Savala of Loveland, Colo.; daughter: Ramona Savala of Gering; brother and sister-in-law: Gabrie and Asencion Savala of Nogales, Ariz.; sister-in-law: Mary Sabala of Pueblo, Colo.; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; son: Santos Zavala, brother: Macario Savala; sisters: Helen Chavez and Isabell Godina; granddaughter: Tasya Savala; and nephew: James Mendoza. | |
