SCOTTSBLUFF — More than a hundred young, aspiring wrestlers with their coaches and parents packed the Scottsbluff High School gymnasium on Saturday as the Scottsbluff Club hosted the regional USA Wrestling Tournament. Teams came from all over the valley including, but not limited to, Scottsbluff, Gering, Mitchell, Bayard, Bridgeport, Oshkosh, Alliance, Chadron, Sidney and Kimball to participate.
USA Wrestling’s motto is “Where Olympic Journeys Begin” and they certainly don’t waste any time getting started at an early age. The tournaments are geared for boys and girls age 6 to 10 who participate with their local USA Wrestling clubs. “It’s not necessarily sanctioned by the high schools, but cooperation can be seen in many ways, primarily in the use of the facility,” says Dawn Bahan, a parent and club co-administrator for 308 Takedown.
“The kids all did well,” said Bahan. “Even those that lost today, learned something from it.” She also says that she finds herself cheering for the underdog in the lopsided matches. Bahan pointed out that some of the kids in their club have never lost and some have never won, but they all try hard each time.
