Gering girls snap slide with win over Sidney
January 13, 2011      By Terry Gaston
Gering High School senior Jordan Plummer had a star-spangled Friday night in the Bulldog girls’ basketball game against Sidney.
Plummer opened the game by singing the national anthem, and then the Bulldogs’ captain and lone senior turned in a banner performance with a double-double to pace Gering’s 51-38 home victory over the visiting Red Raiders.

Plummer finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds and was perfect on four free-throw attempts. Her dozen boards led a decisive 45-27 rebounding advantage for the Bulldogs.
“After all the close losses we’ve had, I can’t tell you how happy we are to win,” said Gering coach Adam Freeburg, whose team (4-6 after the win) had lost four straight games. “We’ve worked hard and it paid off for us. Playing that good of competition we played down at Holdrege (Dec. 28 and 29) helped us tonight.”

Junior Morgan Broussard, who led the Bulldogs with 15 points, was 7-for-9 at the line, where Gering was 18-for-28 (64 percent).
“Our free throws the last three games have been over 60 percent,” added Freeburg, whose team was hitting just 48 percent in its first seven games.

Both teams started slowly, with Gering leading just 4-0 with only 2 ½ minutes played. Sidney (6-3) reeled off nine straight points, but the Bulldogs closed to within a point at 9-8 by the end of the first quarter then led 28-24 following a seesaw second period.

Gering used an 8-0 run in the third quarter to build a 42-27 lead at period’s end and never let the Red Raiders close to within 10 the rest of the way in finishing the Bulldogs’ most complete game of the season.

Junior Morgan Greene added 12 points, including a 3-pointer, to also reach double figures for the Bulldogs. Sidney had 11 players score, but Gering denied the Red Raiders a double-figure scorer. Sophomore Karissa Segelke had 9 points for Sidney, which struggle on free throws with 15-for-29 (52 percent.)

Gering was to continue its stretch of five home games in six dates Tuesday night when they entertained Scottsbluff in the North Platte River battle. Look for a separate, late breaking story about the game in this issue of the Gering Citizen.

After visiting Cheyenne East on Thursday, the Bulldogs continue their home stand Saturday when they play Gordon-Rushville at 3 p.m. Next week’s schedule brings Torrington to Gering on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and Chadron to the GHS gym on Jan. 21 for a 5:45 p.m. contest.
