Bulldog boys begin road swing with win at Alliance
February 03, 2011      By Terry Gaston
A run of six straight road games for the Gering boys' basketball team began Friday night with a 67-52 victory at Alliance.
The Bulldogs' third win in four games was hard-fought after Alliance (6-8) had a 28-25 halftime lead.

“We told them at halftime that they were standing around too much,” Gering coach Randy Plummer said. “Then we started moving around more and our press started working against them. From there, we were able to just hustle and make plays.”

The visiting Bulldogs also forced 22 Alliance turnovers and made 20 of 30 free throws for the game, with junior Danny O'Boyle dropping all eight of his free shots.

“In the third quarter I took the starters out, and the best you can say is everyone contributed in the second half,” Plummer said.
Senior Gunnar Britsch led Gering with 14 points and also had seven rebounds, but he still trailed Bulldog junior Tyler Wallace's 12 rebounds. O'Boyle and junior Zach Smith were next with 12 points apiece.

“We got a lot better balance so teams can't just concentrate on shutting just one guy down,” said Plummer, referring to Britsch's outscoring season scoring leader Smith in Friday's win.
After Gering's trip to Ogallala on Tuesday, the Bulldogs go to

Sidney on Friday. Then they will be on the road for the East-West Shoot-Out next week, playing at Lexington on Thursday, at McCook on Friday and at North Platte on Saturday.

Gering finishes the regular season against Scottsbluff on Feb. 18 at Western Nebraska Community College before the Bulldogs begin Class B district playoff action on Feb. 26.
