Teen Voice: Save now for Gering's 8th grade trip to D.C.
June 16, 2011      By Teen columnist, Trent Russell
One of my favorite places when I went were all the memorials. There was the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, and the Iwo Jima Memorial. You go to the Washington Monument. If you are afraid of heights you definitely don’t want to go to the top. It is 555ft. 5in. tall. You even get to go to Mt. Vernon. Which was were George Washington lived. Most of the meals are buffets. The few times you go somewhere else you get to pick from certain items on the menu.

For just over one day you aren’t even in D.C. You go to Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown. By the time you go on this trip you will know that Jamestown was the first town in the “new world.” While here you will see what those people lived in and how they cooked, hunted, and do everything they needed to survive. There are even replicas of the boats they used to get there. They were cramped on the deck sitting almost on top of each other for over a month.

In Williamsburg you get a tour of the older part of the city. You get a ghost tour. There are lots of ghost stories there. You are only told a few. Be prepared for long days. You leave Gering around midnight to go to Denver International Airport. When you finally arrive in D.C. you will not go to your hotel till around 10 o’clock that night. So you will be up around 40 hours straight. You will have to take one nice set of clothes as you will do one fancier dinner. Who knows what you will do. When I went it was just a play but this year it was what is called a dinner theater. A dinner theater is where you eat in a nice place but then your waiters are the actors in a play. Often times they even get those of you in the audience involved.

Be prepared to empty your pockets at a metal detector or be told to leave your cell phones outside as this is D.C. and they have to watch out in these places in which important people are. And a word to everyone this happens every year. Some idiot buys a laser pointer and starts shining it everywhere. The police and security guards orders are if they see such a light to turn and shoot.

Do not say that your reason for not going is you can’t afford it. If you start raising money now by the end of your 8th grade year you will have enough to go. Those of you going to be 7th graders you have another year to wait but you can still start saving so it will be easier when you are an 8th grader.

My opinion is that every kid should try and go. Even if you don’t like history it would still be fun. You get a week with your friends wandering around Washington D.C. having some fun and seeing some amazing things. Such as my favorite place the famous Arlington Cemetery. So start saving and be ready to have an amazing time.
