Gering Senior team falls in last home game
July 14, 2011      By Pedro Escobar, Citizen Intern
As the season dwindles down to its end, the Platte Valley Companies Senior team found themselves playing their last home game Tuesday night. It would be the last time senior players Grant Rimington, Josh Valdez, Bret Hutchison and injured player Mikah Schmall would play at Oregon Trail Park in a Gering uniform.

Chadron struck first after a hit went by shortstop Danny O’Boyle. Senior team answered right away in the bottom of the first with Zach Smith hitting a line drive to center field for an RBI. The scored was knotted 1-1 after the first inning.

There wasn’t much action in the second inning. Both teams played excellent defense and prevented each other from any major threat.

The third inning was key for Chadron. After a leadoff double and a bunt single, Chadron scored off an RBI single to extend the lead. They added another run after a hit out to right field going up by two runs.

A crucial double play by O’Boyle stopped Chadron’s momentum but the hit still brought in a run. The score was 4-1 in favor of the Nationals.

Zach Smith started things off for Senior team hitting the ball out to center right field for a triple. Smith then later scored after a fastball went past the Chadron catcher. Senior team inched a little closer being down by only two runs.

After scoring two more runs Chadron’s lead was 6-2. Unfortunately the Senior team was not able to respond with any runs of their own.

Bret Hutchison started the fifth inning by hitting an infield single. Smith was then walked advancing Hutchison to second. The very next batter, O’Boyle, hit a single out to left field to load up the bases with no outs.

Next at bat was Grant Rimington and he did not hesitate seizing the opportunity. Rimington hit a single for two RBI’s and then advanced on to second after a throw to third by Chadron. The Senior team was back in the game only down 6-4.

Unfortunately due to rain and a delayed start the game was called after five innings. It is not the best way to end the season at home but a 13-5 home record is nothing to sneeze about; a great job done this year by the Platte Valley Companies Senior team.
