An Italian Thanksgiving proves to be more than a slight challenge
November 24, 2011 Lesley Bell
Buongiorno!
I’m originally from Gering (as Jerry Purvis knows), but currently live in Palermo, Sicily, Italy. Five years ago my mother, Janet Bell, was visiting as I awaited the birth of my first child.
My son was born on Nov. 18, 2006, and my mother stayed well after his birth to help out and enjoy being Grandma. We thought it would be fun to do “Thanksgiving” here. All of our Italian relatives had heard of Thanksgiving and had mental pictures of turkeys and trimmings from movies they’d seen.

My mother came well prepared, loading her luggage with pumpkin pie filling, cranberries, cherry pie filling and my favorite, raspberry Jello, dried raspberries and marshmallows to make one of my favorite family holiday desserts.

The tricky part to doing Thanksgiving in Italy was getting a turkey. Italians eat turkey legs and cold cut turkey breast meat but never do they cook a whole turkey. However, unlike Western Nebraska, where I found it basically impossible to find a butcher who could procure me a custom cut of meat the last time I was back, the Italian butcher “culture” is alive and well (there are many butcher shops here – you simply walk in and find a wide array of meats and cuts and order what you don’t see).

With the help of my husband, my mother managed to order a turkey for the feast...but the butcher couldn’t give any guarantees as to what size the beast might be. That should have been a warning sign!
Thanksgiving Day arrived and it was time to go and pick-up the turkey. My husband accompanied my mother to pick it up and found a massive 10 kilo (22 lb) bird waiting for them!

At the time, I had a pathetic, cramped, little gas oven, so it had been decided in advance that my sister-in-law’s house and her ample oven would be used to cook the bird. Nonetheless, even her spacious oven had difficulty accommodating such a monstrous bird!
Its legs had to be cut off just to fit it into the oven. My mother usually cooks her turkey in one of those “turkey bags” – a nice way to keep all the juices in while cooking and renders the final product moist and tasty. She had brought her “turkey bag” along in her luggage and struggled to close it around the enormous bird. She recalled that in all of her years of preparing turkeys, she had NEVER encountered one as massive as this Italian turkey.

I was at home being a new mother while my mother spent the morning cooking the bird with my sister-in-law. Not expecting anyone back before noon, I was surprised when our buzzer rang and my husband and mother rushed into our apartment, my husband collecting all of the rags he could get his hands on.

There was a turkey emergency and my sister-in-law’s kitchen was a mess. And then he was gone. My mother remained, as she had all of the trimmings to prepare. She had expected to leave the turkey to cook in peace at my sister-in-law’s and come back home and calmly prepare the rest of the meal. She explained that the turkey was so large that even with the legs cut off, the bag the turkey was in was touching the edges of the oven.

One can imagine the scene: the plastic turkey bag touching the hot metal oven wall and the bag rupturing spilling all of those turkey juices – not only inside of the oven, but overflowing out onto the kitchen floor. It was a turkey containment nightmare!

My husband worked feverishly to aid his sister in cleaning the mess while the turkey cooked on. My mother hustled to prepare the rest of our Thanksgiving staples hoping that the turkey would somehow miraculously get cooked!

Several hours later (more than anticipated), the bird was cooked and found its way back to my home to be carved. For me it was a taste of home – real comfort food as only a mother can make.
For my Italian relatives, it was a meal from the movies and experience in American culture. For everyone involved it was certainly unforgettable!
So Happy Thanksgiving to all
! Eat an extra plate of turkey with all the trimmings for me and my family. I won’t be attempting to tackle an Italian turkey this year or anytime in the near future!
