SIDNEY — The Banner County Lady Wildcat girls basketball team won their third straight MAC Title by defeating Potter-Dix Saturday night in Sidney by the score of 53-38. Jessica Bruce and Lindsey Soule combined for 40 points with Bruce leading all scorers with 23.
The Lady Wildcats ran the ball well all night, getting several fast break layups and they seemed in control of the game from the outset. There were times however when the game felt closer than the final score indicated.
When asked what stood out in the win, Banner County Coach Brittany Cooper said, “Composure. We kept our composure throughout and didn’t get rattled.” That composure was much needed as Potter-Dix battled hard all night to make a game of it.
Banner County jumped out to a 9-2 lead after running off seven straight points. They extended their lead to 15-6 before the Lady Coyotes hit a three to finish out the first quarter, 15-9.
Our score was stuck at 18-9 for more than half of the second quarter as both teams stuggled to find the basket. A couple of buckets and a free throw later and the score ended up at halftime with the Lady Wildcats leading 23-12.
After being down by 17 with 4:20 left to go in the third, the Lady Coyotes fought hard to get the deficit back down to 10 by going on a 10-3 run to end the quarter. The score after three, 36-26 advantage Banner County.
The Lady Wildcats then went on a run of their own, scoring 17 in the final stanza to finish off the Lady Coyotes, 53-38 to win their third MAC Title in a row.
Next up for the Wildcats is a rematch with Potter-Dix at home on Friday where both the girls and boys will be in action.
