| The big winner of the 72nd annual Wayne Binfield Invitational track and field meet on Saturday was the weather. The meet, at Scottsbluff's Bearcat Stadium, has experienced some horrid inclement weather in past years, and even multiple drastic conditions during the course of a day's competition. Saturday's meet had just four schools competing: Scottsbluff, Gering, Alliance and Cheyenne East, and no team scores were kept. But the competition was far from lagging. Meet records fell in three events, including the boys' 800-meter run, where the first three runners actually broke Scottsbluff graduate Tyler Brandt's year-old record of 2:08.00. Bearcat Tayler James cruised to victory in 2:02.41, while Gering senior Ryan Bustinza's third-place time of 2:06.15 bettered Brandt's previous record. Bustinza also finished second in the 3,200 meters behind another record-breaker, Cheyenne East's Michael Kesy (10:19.47). Another East runner set the other meet record. Logan Yurek ran 59.57 seconds to win the girls' 400-meter dash, and Yurek also won the pole vault (10 feet, 6 inches); and by Michael Kesy in the 3,200 meters (10:19.47). Gering had two individual boys' victors and one winning relay. Junior Zac Bibb cleared 6 feet, 3 inches to win the high jump by seven inches, and senior Danny O'Boyle won the 400-meter dash in 50.92 seconds, a race in which teammate Ryan Schwartzkopf finished in second. O'Boyle and Schwartzkopf teamed with senior Dillon Wademan and sophomore Dillon DeMott to win the 4x400 relay in 3:31.35 for an eight-second victory. James was joined as boys' winners from Scottsbluff by senior Isaiah Castellaw, who won the 300 intermediate hurdles in 41.45 seconds over junior teammate Matt Klein. Castellaw also finished second in the 110 high hurdles. Bearcat junior Luke Worden won the 100 dash in 11.27 seconds and was second in the 200. Ben Willis-Teff won the 1,600 meters in 4:52.73. In the field events, Jon Maag won the sho9t put at 47-9 and was second in the discus. On the girls' side, Gering senior Chelsea Wickard won both hurdles events and anchored the Bulldogs' winning 4x100-meter relay. Wickard won the 100 high hurdles in 16.76 seconds and the 300 lows in 48.33 seconds. Also a winner on the track for Gering was Rachel Huffman in the 1,600 meters (5:38.68). | ||
