| Bulldogs bounce back in Douglas game |

| After a great season opener in North Platte, the Gering Bulldogs went through a small slide losing two straight games at home. The Bulldogs dropped their first home game against Cheyenne East, getting shut out 3-0. The following game wasn’t any easier as Gering lost a close one against North Platte 2-1. But Gering quickly bounced back from its two defeats. Their fifth game against first-year soccer program Douglas High School gave the Bulldogs a much needed victory to stay above the .500 mark. In the first half it was all Gering pressuring every ball and pushing the attack nonstop against the Tigers. They went up 2-0 early in the half and scored a late one to take a 3-0 lead into the half. The second half was no different. Gering scored two more to cap a decisive win over Douglas for a 5-0 win. The Bulldogs’ next game was on the road once again against Torrington High School where they once again established a lot of pressure and pushed their attack putting the Trailblazers on their heels. With plenty of scoring opportunities, the Bulldogs scored three goals and held Torrington to just one a strong defensive effort. On Saturday, the day after April Fools’ Day, Gering found itself once again in North Platte playing two difficult games. The first game of the day was against the Grand Island Northwest Vikings. The game was deadlocked at 0-0 in the first half. Both teams had their moments but Gering had the most opportunities to score and really pull ahead. In the second half the Vikings broke the ice as their striker dribbled, what seemed to be easily, through the middle taking a shot that deflected off the right post into the goal. After the breakdown, Mason Nab and Jesse Richard really ignited things for Gering taking the team’s level of play to a higher level. The Vikings left back was their backline’s weak side. Nab stepped it up another gear and got past the defender placing two dangerous crosses and winning a corner kick in three consecutive plays. On his next play Nab got past left back defender once again and shot a near post goal tying the game and giving the Bulldogs new life. Towards the end of the game Grand Island Northwest had one great opportunity to score but a great save from goalkeeper Joey Rasnic kept the game tied which eventually ended 1-1 sending it to a penalty kick shootout. Unfortunately luck wasn’t with the Bulldogs on this day as they lost 4-2 in a game which most would say Gering should have put away in regulation. The second game of the day would be against the Lexington Minutemen. The first half was fast paced and back and forth. Both teams took a 2-2 score into halftime. In the second half the 20-plus man rotation and a defensive breakdown from the Bulldogs was too much to hang with the Minutemen. Lexington scored two goals down the middle of the defense and got lucky with a bad deflection which resulted in an own goal. Perhaps with a change on defense and more organization from the backline the Bulldogs could have had a chance to keep it a closer than what it was. The game ended 6-3 in favor of Lexington. Lady Bulldogs On the other side the Lady Bulldogs had an excellent day against both Lexington and Grand Island Northwest. Against Lexington the ladies posted an 8-0 showcase, and against the Vikings it wasn’t as good because the game was only 6-0! A total team effort resulted in total domination by the Gering Lady Bulldogs. |
