Bayard girls win District C-11 title, Tiger boys second

Bayard will be well represented at the Class C State Track and Field Championships this weekend after the Tiger girls won the District C-11 team title on their home track last Friday, and the Stuart siblings swept the pole vault gold medals.

Senior Amanda Dechant's one victory and two second-place finishes paced the Bayard girls to 106 points, with Bridgeport taking fourth with 74 points and Morrill seventh with 44.

The Tiger boys were second with 80 points, finishing behind Gordon-Rushville's 106 points. Morrill was fifth with 58 points and Bridgeport took seventh with 53.

Dechant won the triple jump at 33 feet, 10-1/4 inches and finished second in the long jump (16-5-1/2) and discus throw (121-10).

Freshman Megan Stuart also struck gold for Bayard, winning the pole vault at 8-6, and she ran the 300 low hurdles in a state-qualifying 51.7 seconds for third place.

Dechant also anchored the Tigers' second-place 4x100 relay to a state-qualifying 52.0 seconds. Junior Katie Fibelstad, sophomore Alicia Conklin and freshman Breanna Korell set the pace for Dechant.

Fibelstad qualified in the 100 dash with a third-place time of 13.2 seconds.

Senior Whitney Marquez was second in the 400 dash (1:01.8) and third in the 200 dash (27.9) and led off Bayard's 4x400 relay that made state with a fourth-place time of 4:29.1. Stuart, Korell and sophomore Kaylyn Long followed Marquez.

The Tigers' 4x800 relay also made state with their sixth-place time of 13:15.7. Freshmen Hannah Lenhart, Haley Sauer and Rachel Frerichs and sophomore second leg Sinahi Garcia form the Bayard quartet.

Bridgeport sophomore Jessica Kildow won two golds, winning the 400 dash in 1:01.7 and anchoring the Bulldogs' winning 4x400 relay. Juniors Peyton Hall and Jaslyn Livingston and sophomore joined Kildow on the relay for a winning time of 4:17.6.

Bridgeport senior Nichole Hass won the shot put at 36-4-1/2 and junior Brandie Frickey was second (35-4-3/4). Hass also earned a state berth in the discus with her third-place mark of 121-7. Bulldog sophomore Jamie Schneider tied for second in the high jump to qualify at 4-6.

Bridgeport also qualified its two other relays based on their times. The Bulldogs' 4x800 relay of sophomore Courtney Beyer, senior Valarie Kesterson, Hall and freshman Samantha Hadden finished third in 10:59.8. The BHS 4x100 relay of sophomores Tara Harding, Kildow and anchor Jada Huck along with Livingston was fourth in 55.0 seconds.

Morrill senior Lucy McGlynn earned a state spot in the pole vault with her second-place height of 7-10. Lion senior Jessica Aranti was second in the triple jump at 33-8. Senoir Brooke McMackin and sophomore Jessica Strecker earned state-qualifying times with third-place finishes in the distance races. McMackin's 1,600 time was 6:10.3, and Strecker's 15:05.6 earned her a state berth in the 3,200 run.

For the Bayard boys, junior Brandon Stuart cleared 12-8 to win the pole vault and he won the 300 intermediate hurdles in 40.5 seconds.

Seniors Spencer Jobman and Justin Johnson also scored district victories for the Tigers. Jobman won the 200 dash in 23.3 seconds and also was second in the 100 sprint in 11.4 seconds. Johnson marked at 47-4-1/2 to win the shot put.

All three of Bayard's relays made state as wildcard qualifiers. The third-place 4x400 relay of freshman Brandon Bowers, Stuart, senior Mikah Schmall and Jobman made state with a time of 3:41.7. Bowers, Jobman, Schmall and Stuart earned a state berth in the 4x100 relay with their fourth-place time of 44.9 seconds.

Bayard's 4x800 relay of sophomores Allen Denton and Lane Kizzire and freshmen Jadon Smith and Zach Rice earned a trip to state with a time of 9:52.9 for a fourth-place district finish.

Morrill junior Nathan Rice won the 400 dash in 51.2 seconds and finished second in the 200 at 23.4 seconds. Rice also ran on the Lions' second-place 4x100 relay (44.3 seconds) that included sophomore Taylor Lackey, senior Jakob Sokol and junior Larry Uttecht.

Morrill junior Joseph Hoffman made state in the pole vault, finishing second at 12-4. Lion sophomore Taylor Lackey was second in the long jump at 20-8, and junior teammate Anthony Perez took second in the discus at 119-5.

Bridgeport had second-place qualifiers in sophomore Cody Franklin and freshman Brandon Nichols. Franklin was second in the 1,600 run (4:53.2) and runner-up in the 3,200 meters (10:23.0), while Nichols was silver medalist in the 800 run (2:09.1).

The Bulldogs' 4x800 relay also finished second in a state-qualifying 9:30.3. Sophomores Brandon Conley and Jarrett Ehrhardt set the pace for Nichols and Franklin.

Bridgeport's 4x100 relay also made state with its fifth-place time of 47.7 seconds. Junior Collin DeCora and freshmen Kaleb DeCora, Jaime Gonzalez and Travis Willhoite formed that quartet. The Bulldogs' 4x400 relay of Collin DeCora, junior Nicholas Pappas, Willhhoite and junior Jacob Post qualified with a fourth-place time of 3:47.1.

In the District D-11 meet at Mitchell last Wednesday, the Minatare boys had a district champ in senior Dakin Rummel and earned six total berths to state.
Banner County won both 3,200-meter relay races and the Wildcat girls earned five state berths and the Wildcat boys earned three total state spots.
Rummel won the triple jump at 40-5 and also anchored the Indians' second-place 4x100 relay team (49.8 seconds) that led with juniors Nate Garcia and Richard Mitchell and sophomore Andres Mendoza.
Minatare also earned a state wildcard berth in the 4x800 relay with its fifth-place district time of 10:05.4. Rummel ran the second leg after freshman Robert Ellis and before freshmen Steven Juarez and Bradley Metcalf.
Juarez finished second in the 1,600 run (5:17.4) to automatically qualify for state. Mendoza made state in the 100 dash with his third-place finish in 12.0 seconds, and Mitchell took third in the 110 high hurdles (19.1 seconds) to also qualify.
Banner County freshman Amanda Harrison and three Wildcat teammates will compete in five events at state after they had the district-winning 4x800 relay and Harrison won the open 3,200 run.
Senior Kaylea Stoddard, sophomore Kodee Muhr, junior Lindsey Soule and Harrison won the distance relay in 11:27.2.
Harrison ran to the individual 3,200 title in 13:34.7 while Muhr was second (14:27.6). Harrison also finished second in the 1,600 at 6:25.0. Soule also made state in the shot put at 30-7.
The Wildcat boys won their 3,200 relay, with junior Jordan Knaub, sophomore Jon Anderson, senior Bob Olsen and sophomore Luke Johnson earning the district title in 9:10.5.
Knaub was second in the open 800 at 2:13.8 and also anchored the Wildcats' 4x400 relay that made state with a fifth-place district time of 4:24.1. Sophomore Ruben gomez joined Soule, Johnson and Knaub on that quartet.
