Bearcats' Worden wins double Class B, All-Class state titles

Scottsbluff senior Aubree Worden not only etched her way into state track and field lore Friday and Saturday, she dug her name into state distance-running history.
Worden won both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs at Omaha Burke Stadium to capture the Class B races and the All-Class State Medals in the events for the third straight year.
What made her senior four-medal accomplishment is both wins came in record-shattering fashion and left Worden among the best girls' distance runners in state history. She was already a three-time state cross country champion and two-time All-Class victor in the fall.
In winning the 3,200 on Friday, Worden shattered the Class B 3,200 state record with a time of 10 minutes, 27.330 seconds. She surpassed the Class B state record and state meet record of 10:46.86, held by Nora Shepherd of York since 1993.
Worden's time now ranks third in all-time girls' 3,200 runs, according to the Omaha World-Herald. The state record is 10:19.0 by Karlene Erickson of Wheeler Central in 1982, and the No. 2 time is 10:21.71 set by Emily Sisson of Millard North in 2008.
Worden also dropped 28.77 seconds off her previous best of 10:55.1, set at the Western Conference Championships in Mitchell on May 2.
Then on Saturday, Worden won a multiple medal-winning and record-breaking 1,600-meter run in 4:450.06. She thus surpassed her own Class B record of 4:45.65, set May 6 at the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference Championship in Columbus, and the state meet record of 4:58.14 set by Gering's Sara Ensrud in 2003. Ensrud had the GNAC meet's previous record as well.
Worden's performance also ranks her second in the 1,600 statewide, less than a second behind the 4:49.3 set by Elizabeth Lange of Lincoln Pius X in 2003.
Scottsbluff senior Jennifer Maag also earned two state medals, taking third Saturday in the shot put with a mark of 41 feet, 8 inches. On Friday, Maag placed seventh in the discus at 125-7.
Between Worden and Maag, Scottsbluff finished with 28 points, good for fifth place in the B girls' team standings. Fillmore Central won the team title with 56 points.
Gering finished in 32nd with seven points, led by junior Morgan Greene's sixth-place finish in the high jump at 5-2.
Bulldog junior Kayleigh Schadwinkel finished the long jump in seventh place with a mark of 16-4. Senior Tahlia Schmaltz finished in eighth in the 100 high hurdles in 16.329 seconds and junior Morgan Broussard was eighth in the 300 low hurdles in 48.681 seconds.
In the Class B boys' competition, Gering finished with nine points in a tie for 28th place, while Scottsbluff had eight points in a tie for 32nd and Mitchell had seven points and came in at 34th. Boys Town was a decisive team champion with 65-1/2 points.
Gering senior Dominic Torres posted a career-best performance in finishing third in the 3,200 meters in 9:46.159, dropping nearly 30 seconds off his previous best time.
Bulldog junior Dillon Wademan earned Gering's other medal by taking sixth in the triple jump at 42-5.
Scottsbluff had two medalists in senior Reid Schanaman and sophomore Luke Worden. Schanaman took fourth in the 110 high hurdles in 15.373 seconds, while Worden was sixth in the 100 dash at 11.248 seconds.
Mitchell senior Richard Burke was a double medalist, finishing third in the 800-meter run in 1:57.024 and taking eighth in the 400 in 51.896 seconds.
