| Gering junior Kaitlyn Krzyzanowski’s quest to win the Class B girls’ state golf championship will have to wait one more year. Krzyzanowski, who was third last season, finished the tournament at 14-over-par 158, one stroke behind Elkhorn South junior Ann Pearson (82-75) for medalist honors after she took a triple-bogey on the final hole of the two-day event at the Riverside Golf Club in Grand Island. Scottsbluff, which began the year as the three-time defending Class B state champion but with little returning experience, capped off a solid season by bringing home the third-place team trophy. Krzyzanowski set the first-day pace with a 5-over-par 77, overcoming a double-bogey 7 on the first hole to lead McCook sophomore Megan Vetrovsky by three strokes. Krzyzanowski finished the front nine in 1-over and had four bogeys on the back nine. Krzyzanowski began Tuesday’s round with another double-bogey and three other bogeys to finish the front nine with a 42 and 10-over through 27 holes, two strokes behind Vetrovsky’s even front-nine at 8-over and one stroke ahead of Pearson. Krzyzanowski entered the final hole at 11-over, with Vetrovsky at 12-over and Pearson at 13-over. While Krzyzanowski and Vetrovsky both scored 8 on the par-5 18th, Pearson made par the hole to win the title. “Obviously it was not the finish we were looking for,” Gering coach Annie Boggs said of Krzyzanowski’s state round, after she had won eight of the previous 10 tournaments this season. “She gave herself the opportunity to win, but it just didn’t happen this time. “We just don’t want to lose sight of the fact that she had a great season. Still, obviously she is one of the best in the state.” Pearson led Elkhorn South to the team title with a four-player, two-day score of 673, with its best four scorers making the top 11. South finished eight strokes ahead of runner-up and District B-4 champion McCook. Scottsbluff was a solid third at 712, with Beatrice a distant fourth at 765. The Bearcats improved on their first-day score of 362, also good for a solid third, by 12 strokes and had all five players make the top 20. “How far they have come is really something,” said Scottsbluff coach Mike Klein, who was unable to attend the state tournament because of a sanction imposed during the summer by the Nebraska Secondary Activities Association but had plenty of on-site help and news from assistant Julia Baucum. Scottsbluff junior Ashlee Pilkington was the model of consistency for the Bearcats, shooting 87 both days and finishing in a tie for eighth overall at 174 after placing eighth outright after the first day of play. “Ashlee played fine and was very consistent,” Klein said. “That is just what she does, and I am proud of her.” Freshman teammate Jordan York finished in a tie for 14th, after finished Monday in ninth, with an 89-93 – 182. Sophomores Megan Pilkington (91-92) and Kim Moore (101-82) finished in a tie for 17th at 183. Sophomore Morgan Lease improved on her first-day 95 with an 89 Tuesday to bag a 184 for 20th place. After the first day, the Bearcats were a solid third as a team at 362, 12 strokes behind second-place McCook and 15 behind first-day leader Elkhorn South' s347. “We were at 398 the first of the year and had a low of 337 at districts, and 350 (Tuesday).” Klein said. “They were fired up with our finish and every improved a little bit.” Class C In the Class C tournament at Columbus, Bridgeport's Jada Huck finished in 10th place with a second-day score of 88 (190 total) after she was tied for 13th at 20-over 92 following the first day. Bridgeport also was 10th in the team standings with a four-player count of 881. Also for the Bulldogs, Tara Harding was tied for 61st at 216 (105-111), Kaytlen Hernandez was 81st at 244 (122-122) Molly Schmunk was 82nd at 246 (120-126) and Breanne Franklin came in 87th at 253 (132-121). Bayard sophomore JaLee Pilkington finished 30th at 196 after carding an 88 Tuesday, bouncing back after she struggled to a count of 108 and a tie at 59th on Monday. | ||
